Course Leaders

Kaji Sritharan MBBS, FRCS (Gen), MD (Res), DIC


Kaji is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Imperial College NHS Trust. She graduated from St Mary’s Hospital, London in 2001, and completed an intercalated BSc in Physiology at University College London. She went on to become an Anatomy Demonstrator at Oxford University, where she was awarded the Dooley Prize in Anatomy for teaching. She continued there for several years as Tutor in Anatomy and Embryology for Christ Church College, Oxford. Kaji completed her basic surgical training on the Hammersmith Hospitals rotation, London, and her higher surgical training in Northwest Thames, and undertook an Endovascular Fellowship in Brisbane, Australia, prior to taking up her current Consultant post.

Her research into Carotid Plaque Vascular Biology was performed at Charing Cross Hospital, and she has published more than 20 peer-reviewed papers and presented more than 40 national and international abstracts.  Her prizes include: the Venous Forum and American College of PhlebologyPresentation Prizes, the Glaxo-Travelling and Simpson-Smith Travelling Fellowships, the GlaxoSmithKline Fellowshipand the MIA Prize for laboratory-based research; she has also been awarded ICSM Student Union Colours.

As a research fellow, Kaji organized the Imperial College’s surgical finals clinical exam and is a finals examiner for both Imperial and GKT medical schools. Kaji has a passion for teaching and education. As a member and past president of the Trainees Committee of the Royal Society of Medicine, she led in the design and implementation of a Skills Lab within the RSM, and developed the popular RSM OSCE Training Days and Revision Weekends. She has also published a number of books including, the Royal Society Medicine Careers Handbooks, 300 Essential SBAs in Surgery, Get Through Postgraduate Medical Interviews, Essential Notes in Medicine & Surgery for Finals and the best-seller Essential OSCE Topics for Medical and Surgical Finals.

Kapil Sahnan MBBS, BSc, MRCS

Kapil qualified from Imperial College London with an intercalated BSc in Cardiovascular Sciences in 2009. His foundation years were in Oxford and he completed his core surgical training in the Severn Deanery.

Kapil ranked 1st in the country in the 2013 general surgery national recruitment process and is now a registrar in North-West London.  Kapil has over ten peer reviewed publications and over 20 national/international presentations.

He began designing courses early in his career and has now set up over four successful regional and national courses. He has a long history in teaching and mentoring and is currently involved in setting up a national mentoring program for the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM).

Jessamy Bagenal MBBS, BSc, MRCS

Jessamy graduated from University College London in 2009.  She undertook her foundation training in Oxford and subsequently completed core training in the Severn Deanery.  She obtained her first choice national training number on her first attempt in North-West London in 2013.

Jessamy has over ten peer reviewed publications and over 20 national/international presentations.  She has won several awards, most recently Core Trainee of the Year 2013. During her career she has excelled in teaching; setting up a number of successful courses including ‘Laparoscopy for the new Registrar’ course in Severn Deanery.

She has acted as a trainee representative on the South-West Surgical Training Network (SWSTN) board, which delivers over 15 surgically-based courses.  Jessamy has now been essential in the design and organization of two national conferences including the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) annual conference and the ‘Laparoscopy for the new Spr’ In 2013, she was appointed Editor of FMLM TS News and is heavily involved in the medical leadership movement.
